Networking

Close

Often when looking to improve skills we go straight to the training providers, buy the books, take the exam and get the certificate without thinking of alternative or additional options. Networking is a fantastic way to gain knowledge from your peers, be put in contact with mentors, learn about the way different companies and people handle a particular issue / project and more. The alliances you create now can also be life-long and you never know where that one conversation can take you.

Here at Assist we strongly advocate the benefits of networking and the Assist Community gives you the opportunity to discuss a range of topics with like-minded individuals, get advice and develop strong working relationships.

Training

Further training is not only beneficial to your company but also to you as an individual. Your first point of call should be your employer where you can discuss further training options, this could lead to in-house training for your team, mentoring or free basic skills. Coming forward with a proposal to do a qualification or a new skill has the added advantage of highlighting you as a pro-active individual, and if it is external training you desire - do your research and come forward with some options, your employer may help towards the cost or look at a flexi-time option.

Alternatively there are thousands of training courses and qualifications available out there and direct.gov is a good starting point. Be open to training options that you may not have considered for example; apprenticeships, online courses. If you are unsure of your next step you can talk to one of the LearnDirect advisors for free on 0800 100 900, lines are open from 8.00 am to 10.00 pm, seven days a week.

Appraisals and Employee Development Plans

Close

An appraisal scheme is often adopted by employers in order to make the most of their most valuable asset - you, the employee. This traditionally takes the form of regular meetings with your line manager which gives you the opportunity to discuss positives, negatives and put forward what you want. From this an employee development plan will be formed - often this will include training schemes, peer support or re-focussing of your role. Each company has its own method and approach - your employee handbook should provide you with more information, but to give you an idea of what to expect the ACAS Employee Appraisal booklet will help.
