There are numerous health and safety training courses available and your company may even run in-house training sessions on a regular basis. If you are looking at becoming a safety representative or want to take you first aid qualification a good starting point is the British Safety Council website which will provide you with the information you need and point you in the right direction. This training is not only useful to you as an individual it will also be of great benefit to any potential employer.

Managing Stress

Pressure is an expected part of work, however too much can result in stress which ultimately leads to reduced performance and can be costly to employers.

There are a number of basic practices you can put in place to help reduce the risk of stress, and your company should have in place a stress policy and procedures. HSE provide a very in-depth look at work related stress, including discussion forums, guidance booklets and survey tools.

Fire Safety

Alongside your Health and Safety policy will be a Fire Safety policy outlining procedures and providing information on use of fire safety equipment. Your employer is responsible for advising you of the fire safety procedure and you will recieve information at your induction - if you do not, ask. There will be a fire safety representative for your office make sure you know who he / she is. Most company's do practice fire drills and all information should be provided in your employee handbook. Accidents

Accidents do occur, no matter how efficient and well assessed you company is, when an accident happens to you or anyone in your office it is important to follow company procedures and make sure you record any injury in the 'accident book' (under the Reporting of Injuries and Dangerous Occurences Regulations 1995) - for more information please refer to Business Link's website. If need be, make sure your employer has reported it to the HSE.

If there are health and safety problems at work, point them out to your employer or the employee safety representative, and ask for them to be dealt with

Introduction to Health and Safety

All companies will have a health and safety policies and guidlines in place, this is a legal requirement for companies and is there to provide a safe working environment for you. There are a number or duties your employer is responsible for including making your workplace safe as well as informing and educating you on procedures and appropriate machinery use. For further information please see the Health and Safety Executive (responsible for health and safety regulation in Great Britain, and alongside the government are an enforcing authority), www.hse.gov.uk.

As an employee you also have legal duties to take reasonable care for your own health and safety, correctly use work items in accordance with your training or instructions (provided by your employer) and to not interfere or misuse anything that has been provided for your welfare.
