Communication

Close

Communication is the key, not only does it improve relations in the workplace it can lead to higher productivity. Don't feel you can't ask, if you want to have a discussion with your line manager (even if it isn't your appraisal date) ask, if you have a grievance follow the procedure in place. Similarly with fellow colleagues, if you want some advice about your computer ask your IT department, if someone keeps stealing your chocolate biscuits from the kitchen ask them not to. The Chartered Institute of Personnel Development have provided a fact sheet looking at employee communication.

Policies

Close

When joining a company you can expect to be presented with an employee handbook or be provided with information on the company's policies. Policies and procedures are in place to help you, not catch you out, it ensures that everyone is working from the same sheet and that if anything arose i.e. a grievance you know how to proceed appropriately.

It is important to familiarise yourself with these policies as they can differ from company to company, Business Link have detailed a few policies that you can expect to see in your work place. Although policies are not legally binding they can be enforced.
