Bullying and Harrassment at Work

Everyone should be treated with dignity and respect at work. Bullying and harassment of any kind are in no-one's interest and should not be tolerated in the workplace. This ACAS leaflet is designed to offer practical advice to employers to help them prevent bullying and harassment and to deal with any cases that occur. It also includes guidelines for the development of policies and procedures.

Prevention is Better than a Cure

Nobody wants conflict to arise, in order to prevent this you need to be ahead of your game and get it early, here are some key points to help you achieve this:

*Know the company's discipline and grievance procedure (refer to our Discipline and Grievance Procedures page) and understand the minimum statutory procedures.
*Utilise the free support around you, namely the ACAS helpline: 08457 47 47 47.
*Improve the ability of you and your managers to handle grievances and difficult conversations (please refer to our Skills and Training Page for more information).
*Consider using mediation, either from an external source or from trained personnel internally. Please view the ACAS Mediation video.
*Keep your staff happy through motivation (please refer to our Motivation page for more information).

Industrial Disputes

Industrial disputes do arise despite the cost and damaging effect on both employees and companies. The attached code of practice produced by the Department of Trade and Industry helps guide you through an industrial dispute.

ACAS Conciliation Service

ACAS is a publically funded independant organisation whose job is to promote good employment relations. Within this they offer a concilation service which aims to find a solution between employer and employee without having to go to a tribunal.

Tribunals

The Employment Tribunals are judicial bodies established to resolve disputes between employers and employees over employment rights.

Discipline and Grievance Procedures

As well prepared as a company is, a grievance may arise, in this situation it is vital that you are well prepared and correctly handle the matter .

ACAS have provided the Handbook on Discipline and Grievances in the Workplace to ensure that you are aware of necessary prevention methods, common grievances and the relevant procedure.
